This role serves as the primary liaison between business stakeholders, customers, and development teams to ensure the product meets regulatory requirements, customer needs, and strategic business goals.

The Product Owner owns the product backlog, leads project planning activities, creates clear and actionable user stories, and ensures high-quality delivery of features related to retirement plan compliance.

Key Responsibilities

Product Ownership & Strategy

  • Own and maintain the DC Compliance product roadmap, aligning enhancements with business objectives, regulatory changes, and customer feedback
  • Act as the subject-matter authority for DC Compliance functionality, workflows, and regulatory requirements
  • Prioritize enhancements, defects, and technical debt based on risk, value, and customer impact

Project Planning

  • Collaborate with development, QA, and product leadership to define milestones and releases
  • Coordinate cross-functional efforts for complex initiatives involving multiple modules (e.g., DB Compliance, Proposal, Portal, Documents, 5500)
  • Act as a buffer between the team and external disruptions to keep projects on track
  • Partner with customer focus groups to gather, analyze, and synthesize feedback to inform large initiatives and ongoing product improvements.

User Story Creation & Backlog Management

  • Translate business requirements, regulatory guidance, and customer needs into clear, well-defined user stories
  • Write user stories with acceptance criteria that are testable, unambiguous, and ensure usability and regulatory compliance
  • Maintain a ready and prioritized product backlog to support efficient development and testing
  • Review completed user stories to confirm acceptance criteria are met prior to release

Regulatory & Compliance Expertise

  • Analyze IRS, DOL, and other regulatory guidance impacting DC plans (e.g., nondiscrimination testing, eligibility, contributions, SECURE 2.0)
  • Verify changes to the software meet regulations and are in line with document provisions
  • Ensure product enhancements/changes are compliant with current regulations and industry best practices

Stakeholder & Customer Collaboration

  • Provide demos to prospective clients
  • Work with Custom Development on DC Compliance and DC Proposal related projects
  • Work closely with the Defined Benefit Compliance Product Owner on projects that support combined efforts and parallel improvements.
  • Gather and synthesize feedback from clients, internal teams, support, and sales to inform prioritization
  • Communicate release details to stakeholders
  • Support customer-facing communications, training materials, videos and documentation as needed
  • Help the support team with questions that they are unable to answer

Quality & Release Support

  • Participate in functional testing, testing review, and release sign-off activities
  • Ensure edge cases, calculations, and compliance logic are thoroughly vetted
  • Support post-release validation and issue triage as needed
  • Own customer communications by creating clear, timely email updates, demonstration videos, and supporting documentation that drive transparency and customer success

Qualifications

Required Experience & Knowledge

  • 3–7 years of experience working in product management, product ownership, business analysis, or solution design
  • Professional credentials such as QPA, QKA, QKC, CPC, or similar retirement plan designations
  • Strong understanding of Defined Contribution retirement plans (e.g., 401(k), 403(b), governmental plans) required
  • In depth knowledge of compliance testing concepts and calculations such as ADP/ACP, coverage, top-heavy, limits, general test, imputed disparity, vesting calculations and eligibility
  • Understanding of aggregated testing for Defined Contribution/Defined Benefit plans

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with retirement plan compliance software or TPA workflows
  • Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO) or similar Agile certification
  • Experience supporting SECURE Act / SECURE 2.0 enhancements
  • Able to manually calculate compliance tests

Key Success Indicators
