Retirement Plan Legal Specialist

Job Summary: The individual hired for this position will be an integral part of Pentegra’s Law team which is responsible for supporting the legal needs of the company. For this individual contributor role, we are seeking a individual who has diverse experience with retirement plan technical issues, including the drafting of legally required notices and plan documents, performing legal research, and assisting with questions from clients and internal staff.
Responsibilities:
- Assist with legal technical matters for retirement plans, including:
- Preparation of various IRS filings (e.g., Voluntary Compliance Program filings, determination letter filings);
- Drafting required IRS/DOL annual plan notices;
- Reviewing new client plan documentation and drafting appropriate documents for conversion;
- Drafting plan amendments and resolutions for all retirement products;
- Drafting and reviewing summary plan descriptions (SPD) and summary of material modifications (SMM);
- Reviewing and processing Qualified Domestic Relations Orders;
- Reviewing and approving of Power of Attorney and Guardianship forms;
- Conducting legal research and analysis and advising internal staff on the results; and
- Assisting with the review of commercial contracts (e.g., Services Agreements).
- Act as a liaison for Internal Sales, Retirement Plan Operations and Account Managers to assist with legal related matters.
- Perform any additional duties, as assigned.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in law, business or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in the retirement services industry
- Experience in Retirement Plan Administration is a plus but not required.
- Proficient in Relius/FIS Documents System is a plus but not required.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate clearly and professionally internally and externally.
- Able to multi-task and meet deadlines
- Intellectually curious and demonstrated problem solving skills
