Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD), a K-12 education institution located in Long Beach, California, is seeking a Benefits Consultant to provide backup for the existing Benefits Administrator (manager).

LBUSD, established in 1885, is listed by The Global Education Study among five of the world’s highest performing school systems, and by a McKinsey & Company study as top-three in the U.S. in terms of sustained and significant improvements, and employs more than 6,000, in support of almost 70,000 students.

Position will be entirely remote in the interim, District-knowledge gaining, phase.  If true back-up is needed, some onsite work may be required, which travel and/or lodging would be at Consultant’s expense.

To obtain the District-specific knowledge necessary to perform the backup role, in the interim, the Benefits Consultant will assist with projects, which could include:

  1. Documenting benefits processes
  2. Creating retiree presentations
  3. Documenting the annual IRS Form 1095 process, which currently utilizes an outside vendor system
  4. Assisting a newly forming Wellness Committee in developing a calendar of events, and monitoring effectiveness
  5. Reviewing 403(b)/457 retirement plan vendors - investment offerings, costs
  6. Promoting online financial education modules developed by credit union vendor
  7. Exploring bringing currently outsourced benefits website in-house to create destination site, trade-offs of more control, speed and volume of postings, vs. resources and costs necessary
  8. Creating ongoing RFP process for benefit vendor searches
  9. Creating new hire orientations

Requirements / Qualifications

  • Proven experience as benefits consultant/benefits manager
  • Experience in project management, preferably benefits related
  • Full understanding of HR legislation, health & welfare benefits, retirement policies and procedures
  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources, business administration, or similar
  • Excellent computer skills, and experience with payroll and HR management software/systems
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving abilities
