Senior Corporate Counsel (ERISA)

Job Summary: Position primarily supports the institutional trustee and independent fiduciary services, institutional plan recordkeeping and administration lines, reporting to the company’s SVP – Legal Counsel.

• Negotiates and drafts legal agreements, fiduciary reports and other documentation
• Provides legal support to the client relations teams; and manages and resolves legal issues related to client engagements
• Analyzes transactions for compliance with ERISA/other applicable fiduciary law
• Supports business development activities as needed
• Researches legal developments and trends affecting Newport Group and its business and assesses the impact, including drafting legal memoranda, articles, client alerts and white papers; work in collaboration with internal stakeholders to ensure compliance with applicable law
• Performs other functions as assigned by the General Counsel or SVP – Legal Counsel in support of the company’s legal and risk management program
• Builds consensus and collaboration, and adapts quickly to a changing work environment
• Works well independently while under pressure in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with a high degree of responsiveness
• Interacts effectively with all levels of management and staff
• Regular, reliable and punctual attendance

Management Responsibilities

• N/A

Required Education, Experience and Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

• J.D. from an accredited US law school required; active bar license in good standing
• Minimum of 8-10 years relevant experience (in-house experience a plus)
• Extensive experience with ERISA and ERISA-related legal issues (e.g., Title I fiduciary and prohibited transaction issues, the Investment Advisers Act, trust law issues)
