Position Summary

ERISA/Internal Revenue Code benefit plan legal generalist position. Serves as the subject matter legal expert for large, complex employee benefit plans, including a Defined Benefit Plan, Defined Contribution Plan, and Health and Welfare Plan. The position performs legal research and writing on all matters relating to sponsoring and administering plan, with particular emphasis on tax and compliance matters, particularly DB and DC 401(k). Substantive areas of work may include participant disclosure, government reporting, plan accounting, plan documentation, benefits industry litigation and disputes, claims and appeals, contracts and procurements, statutory and regulatory compliance, and privacy and security.  

  • Collaborates with attorneys and other compliance personnel on legal and compliance tax and risk issues 
  • Prepares legal summaries of ERISA, DOL and IRS statutes and regulations 
  • Reviews, prepares, researches, and writes any required communication concerning claims relating to the plans 
  • Reviews, prepares, and researches government reporting documents and participant disclosures

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor
  • Approximately five ERISA/Code or related experience or equivalent
  • Tax Code retirement plan/401k experience preferred
  • Member of Bar of any state 
  • Eligibility for Virginia bar or Virginia Corporate Counsel designation 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Knowledge of ERISA, IRS and DOL regulations and laws related to federally regulated employee benefit plans 
  • Ability to create and maintain strong client relationships and rapport, ensuring excellent collaboration and communication across the organization Ability to perform legal research
  • Ability to manage competing deadlines and multiple projects at various stages of development using effective organization skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate, both verbally, in writing, and via presentations with a diverse membership, employees and/or vendors in a clear and precise manner. 
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office tools (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, MS Teams) in the day-to-day essential duties of the job.
  • Ability to operate various office equipment such as personal computer, copier, printer, fax machine or other job-related equipment. 
  • Ability to provide service excellence by building relationships, being resourceful, responsive and respectful.
