Tax Operations Consultant

The Tax Operations Consultant serves as an internal consultant supporting the tax withholding and remittance function and potentially other tax-related services applicable to all lines of business. Acts as a liaison between internal clients and external product providers or vendors across relevant business lines, including correspondence and contact with the IRS. Additionally, performs a wide variety of duties and coordination of special product tasks including investigation and resolution of issues, preparation and/or review of tax forms, submission of abatement requests to the IRS, coordination of technology fixes,  managing special projects as assigned and coordinating activities between internal departments.

What you will do

  • Acts as a SME on tax related functions, including but not limited to withholding/remittance and form production
  • Prepares and/or reviews and files Forms 941, 945, and 1042-S, as well as requesting abatements with the IRS
  • Preparation and/or QC of daily tax reconciliations, verifying withholding amount and validating remittance liabilities to the IRS, 50 states, and US territories, to ensure accurate production of government level reporting
  • Researches, reconciles, and responds accurately to IRS and State notices received
  • Identifying and analyze IRS/tax law changes and implements process and technology changes to support them
  • Tax reporting SME for other teams, such as customer service, sales, Implementation, and processing operations groups
  • Works with internal operations and systems teams to resolve escalated problems
  • Coordinates system fixes, enhancements and otherwise support these unique products including systems upgrades
  • Identifies and implements internal process improvements with an eye on efficiency improvement and risk reduction
  • Regularly thinks outside the box with an extreme customer focus to respond accurately and timely to sensitive and complex situations, including escalated issues
  • Provides continued education and training to various functional groups throughout the organization related to new processes and the implementation of new technology

What you will bring

  • Bachelor's degree preferred, preferably in Accounting, Business, Finance or related field or equivalent related experience
  • 5 or more years financial services experience with a focus on tax/accounting, preferably in group retirement or corporate tax
  • Ability to work independently with solid problem solving skills
  • Must be able to meet deadlines, prioritizing competing priorities as appropriate
  • Excellent customer service, written and verbal skills
  • Demonstrated analytical skills
  • Must be detailed oriented
  • FINRA fingerprinting required

What will set you apart

  • Experience working with the IRS to request penalty abatements and/or to coordinate/solve other IRS related issues or inquiries
  • CPA preferred, but not required
  • Understanding of Puerto Rico tax rules
  • Advanced knowledge of MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Experience researching/analyzing IRS tax code changes and implementation of such changes
  • Understanding of tax concepts such as withholding, liability, and various form types including but not limited to 945, 941, 1099, W2, 1042-S and 480.7C
  • Ability to think outside the box to come up with creative solutions for complex issues
  • FINRA Series 6 permitted but not required
