Position Overview

The Manager, Corporate Benefits is part of the HR-Benefits Team, which has the responsibility of developing, negotiating, and customizing the health, welfare, and retirement programs for each of Bertelsmann's U.S. operating Companies within the United States, including Penguin Random House, BMG, Fremantle, Arvato Systems and other holdings/groups, including new acquisitions.

As the Manager, Corporate Benefits, you are the subject matter expert for the retirement plans offered to Bertelsmann’s Operating Companies. You are expected to possess a wealth of knowledge and understanding of retirement benefits at an employee-facing and corporate level. You will support the day-to-day operations of the company’s retirement programs and data review of mandatory operational compliance. You will process invoices and allocate costs amongst operating companies.  You will also coordinate with benefit vendors to resolve issues and research and resolve any escalated employee questions that arise. You will provide excellent customer service in assisting HR partners with benefits focused primarily on 401(k) and nonqualfied retirement plans. However, you will have the opportunity to become involved in the administration of other benefit programs. In addition, you will work closely with the entire HR-Benefits Team on organizational initiatives. The Manager, Corporate Benefits reports to the Senior Vice President of Human Resources.

Role and Responsibilities 

  • Manage the administration, compliance, and communication of U.S. 401(k) and nonqualified retirement benefit programs
  • Manage annual plan audits, and ensure the timeliness and accuracy of required government filings, such as 5500s, and 5330s
  • Manage required nondiscrimination testing for 401(k) and Dependent Care FSA, including data collection, review, and communication with our Operating Companies
  • Assist with the implementation of new vendors and onboarding of acquired companies
  • Analyze changes to state and federal laws pertaining to benefits and recommend appropriate changes to management
  • Research, interpret, and provide Human Resources/Benefits colleagues with guidance on established policies and procedures
  • Review and update Summary Plan Descriptions in partnership with internal and external stakeholders
  • Resolve administrative problems with the carrier representatives, investigate discrepancies, and provide information in non-routine situations
  • Draft and coordinate the distribution of communications including total compensation and benefit statements, ad hoc participant issues, fund changes, required notices, financial wellness, and other retirement initiatives
  • Partner and collaborate with HRIS, Corporate Benefits, HR Business partners, and external vendors to resolve escalated issues regarding enrollment, eligibility, deferrals, and distributions
  • Assist with vendor management, policy development, and ad hoc projects
  • Evaluate effectiveness of programs through the collection and analysis of data to make data-driven decisions regarding program improvement in order to meet employee needs
  • Ensure proper document retention in accordance with statutory and internal business practices
  • Prepares and allocates invoices to participating Operating Companies
  • Other duties may be assigned to meet business needs

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • 5 or more years of work experience managing retirement plans required; consulting experience preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree or related experience required; CEBS or ASPPA certification preferred
  • Must be detail-oriented, highly organized, and be comfortable working on complex problems in which analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation
  • Solid interpersonal skills, judgment, and client service orientation with focus on high quality service to internal and external stakeholders
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate information across a large organization.
  • Must be flexible; have the ability to work independently or as a team player in a fast-paced and decentralized environment
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Excel, including VLOOKUP and Pivot Tables, and other Office applications
  • Must maintain strict confidentiality and employee privacy
  • Must be able to multi-task, prioritize, and have excellent project management skills
