Role Summary

The Manager Retirement Services is responsible for executing on the strategy for retirement programs at Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air. As a people leader, this role leads and establishes priorities for the team to administer various defined benefit and defined contribution plans and provide remarkable service to plan participants, while ensuring all compliance requirements are met.

Key Duties

  • Leads team and establishes priorities of subject matter experts within retirement.
  • Executes on strategy for retirement programs.
  • Oversees the administration of multiple defined benefit and defined contribution plans, including ongoing design, compliance, participant services and communication, ensuring regulatory compliance with applicable laws for retirement programs and associated policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for actuarial valuations, annual audits, government filings and required plan communications and disclosures.
  • Leads the analyses, assessments and decisions relating to design of company retirement and pension programs.
  • Develops and maintains policies and procedures for pension and retirement benefits.
  • Interprets and administers policies and procedures in accordance with ERISA, HIPAA, DOL, IRS, plan documents, SPDs and other organization rules.
  • Manages vendor relationships to ensure all performance commitments are met.
  • Develops people through effective performance management and ongoing feedback, focusing on delegation for stretch assignments, growing and developing the team for capacity and growth, looking at performance across the team, and time management.
  • Shapes culture of team through action, presence and reinforcement of behavior.

Job-Specific Experience, Education & Skills


  • 5 years of experience in retirement, human resources or related area, preferably with a focus in the management of defined benefit and defined contribution plans.
  • 2 years of leadership experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree with a focus in human resources administration, business administration, finance or related area, or an additional two years of relevant training/experience in lieu of this degree.
  • Working knowledge of defined benefit and defined contribution legal compliance and laws.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, with advanced Excel and Word skills.
  • Strong presentation and training skills.
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Minimum age of 18.
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.


  • Qualified Pension Administrator and 401(k) credentials.
  • Working knowledge of Canadian regulations relating to retirement benefit plans.
  • PeopleSoft HCM and Pension modules experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and mentor a team of employees in a professional field.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute project plans and lead projects.
  • Experience managing vendors.
