Enrolled Actuary

Nova 401(k) Associates

in Remote / Houston TX

Logo for Nova 401(k) Associates

Come join a fast growing national TPA where actuarial expertise is always in high demand! We have a nationally recognized sales team allowing us to grow faster than the industry as a whole providing advancement opportunities and job stability for our professionals. The current Nova DB team includes six enrolled actuaries and we need to add another!

We are currently seeking an Enrolled Actuary for either our Houston office or for remote work. We would prefer a full time EA, but we would consider a part-time EA. This position includes a competitive compensation package including medical insurance, dental insurance, disability insurance, life insurance, a 401(k) plan, an HSA and paid time off. A modest relocation reimbursement is available for highly qualified candidates who would like to move to Houston.

To support your professional development, we will pay for one national conference per year and associated dues for one actuarial membership. We will also pay for attendance at virtual education meetings sponsored by organizations such as ASPPA.

Working at Nova

In our model, most of the work product is produced by a defined benefit specialist for the actuary to review. A consultant is the client’s primary point of contact with the actuary being available for escalation issues. Our practice is focused on micro- and small plans. We do not do GASB work or multi-employers plans.

Our primary software systems are: Penguin for DB/DC testing and valuation; Pension Pro for Workflow management, ASC for DC only administration and Forms 5500 and Relius plan documents.

The DB team meets once or twice weekly on MS Teams. We have separate teams that handle distributions and plan documents. We do very little work for other TPAs.

Expected Duties:

  • Review and sign actuarial reports and Schedule SBs
  • Review and sign PBGC premium and plan termination forms
  • Review benefit certifications
  • Review IRS Non-discrimination testing reports
  • Review and prepare plan designs and consultations with the Nova sales team
  • Review plan documents and amendments
  • Review benefit statements
  • Review plan takeovers, prepare actuarial replications
  • Work with and mentor consultants and DB specialists

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Enrolled Actuary in good standing with the Joint Board and in good standing with any actuarial organizations to which the actuary belongs
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in the qualified plan arena (small plan experience preferred)
  • Experienced with defined benefit / defined contribution combo plan designs and associated nondiscrimination testing
  • Superior command of IRC 401(a)(4), 415, 404, 416, 401(a)(9) regulations
  • Well versed on regulations, IRS notices and memos concerning qualified plans
  • Ability to review plan takeovers, identify missing documents, data and issues
  • Ability to trouble shoot replications that do not match the Nova software and communicate with previous actuary to resolve differences
  • Ability to manage a dashboard (to do list) of assigned work and ability to work with internal deadlines
  • Must be a team player and enter each day with a positive attitude
  • Excellent Microsoft Office skills, particularly Excel
  • Committed to lifelong learning and coachable
  • Flexibility and adaptability
