Purpose of Position

The Consulting Actuary will be responsible for the management of IRS qualified defined benefit pension plans in our small plan market. The majority of these clients sponsor DB/DC combo plans. This includes consulting on the actuarial valuation, special plan design study requests and IRS/DOL/PBGC regulatory compliance. Direct client relationship building for some clients is expected.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage recurring actuarial projects with support staff
  • Represent the company on client calls and in client meetings, as needed
  • Ability to accurately interpret and apply plan document provisions
  • Ensure compliance with DOL, IRS and PBGC requirements
  • Annual compliance testing for assigned clients (401(a)(4), 401(a)(26), Plan Limits, Top Heavy, etc.) for both solo and combo Plans.
  • Preparation and filing of Form 5500 and related schedules, Form 8955-SSA and PBGC filings
  • Prepare and certify actuarial valuations for traditional defined benefit plans and cash balance plans.
  • Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) determination and processing
  • Benefit calculations including optional forms of payment
  • Ensure proper coordination and delivery of annual required notices
  • Review of Retirement Plan Consultant work within team environment
  • Support the retirement plan implementation, conversion, de-conversion and termination processes
  • Oversee plan assignments with an average case load of 80 - 100 clients

Competencies Required

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications
  • Demonstrated excellence in written and verbal communication
  • Must be detailed and possess strong organizational skills
  • Time management focused adhering to deadlines and timelines
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment
  • A demonstrated track-record of consistently meeting and/or exceeding performance expectations
  • Experienced with ASC software preferred
  • Understand plan documents (Basic Plan Document, Adoption Agreement, Summary Plan Description (SPD), Amendments, Summary of Material Modifications (SMM) and annual notices)
  • Understand the annual lifecycle of plan (data collection, eligibility, compliance testing, trust accounting and Form 5500 preparation and filing)

Education and Qualifications

EA designation required

  • Minimum 5 years of experience related to defined benefit actuarial/administration services
  • Broad knowledge of the retirement plan industry
