Contract Attorney (ERISA)

The National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) is a national non-profit trade association located in Arlington, Virginia that represents the interests of more than 900 consumer-owned cooperative electric utilities serving over 39 million people located in 47 states.  We are seeking a contract attorney to provide legal counsel to internal business clients regarding procurement and transactional matters, with a primary focus in the areas of contracts and supplier relationships. The position would start immediately and is temporary with the potential to become permanent. Contract attorneys experienced with the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) are strongly preferred but is not mandatory.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides transactional legal advice to internal business clients concerning acquisitions to procure a variety of products and services
  • Prepares and drafts templates and contracts to be used in a variety of capacities for internal business clients
  • Provides general advice on the legal aspects of a variety of supplier arrangements
  • Interacts with customers to ensure that procurement and contracting requirements are met
  • Administers contracts, to include preparing modifications, resolving problems, and terminating and closing out contracts
  • Conducts/reviews requests for Information/Proposal and provider and vendor management contracts

Experience Required

  • Minimum of 1-3 years


  • Relevant law firm experience
  • Experience in employee benefits and financial services
  • Virginia bar preferred but not required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Excellent legal research and writing skills
  • Admitted to practice in any state, law license in good standing
  • Self-starter capable of meeting all deadlines
  • Ability to provide top quality legal services
  • Superior decision making and judgment skill
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office tools (Excel, Word, Outlook, Power Point) and all typical office equipment
  • Ability to provide service excellence by building relationships, being resourceful, responsive and respectful as demonstrated by prior work experience
