Provides legal services to Nationwide Retirement Plans Operations using their knowledge of retirement plan industry and applicable
laws. Performs complex legal assignments in area of responsibility without supervision. Evaluates legal impacts of various business strategies and practices. Participates as team member for projects, advising on legal risks. Identifies trends,
problems, risks and opportunities preemptively; develops recommendations for preemptive actions to avoid, mitigate, maximize or capitalize upon them as appropriate; effectively communicates information to the client and team. This position is based
in Columbus, OH. Job requirements do not allow for remote or work-from-home arrangements.
Provides legal services to one or more assigned areas focusing on relationships with mid-level OCLO leaders and business partners. Works on
more complex matters and/or projects with moderate supervision primarily with higher level counsel to address legal questions or issues. Exercises judgment in matters which have potential for moderate impact to the company.
Reporting Relationships: May report to Managing Counsel / Senior Counsel / Counsel. Does not have direct reports.
Core Duties and Responsibilities:
- With moderate
supervision, provides legal services to an assigned area(s). Works on legal matters regularly that are routine, with some more complex issues. Regularly attends business partner meetings to better understand business processes and needs.
legal precedents, defines legal and factual issues, drafts necessary legal documents and develops conclusions and recommendations for routine to more complex legal issues.
- Provides legal counsel primarily to other attorneys and mid-level business
partners on legal matters within his or her area of legal expertise. Has little input into Company decision-making.
- Contributes to the effective resolution of routine to complex issues with limited supervision and/or coaching from manager on legal
work or business partner interaction. May have limited interaction with persons outside of the Company on behalf of the organization.
- Keeps appropriate business partners and leaders informed of key issues that impact them. Stays informed of
new legislative and case law activity in area of expertise.
- Establishes relationships and builds rapport with associates at all levels within the OCLO and primarily mid-level business partners.
- Works as a team member on multiple
- Occasionally leads virtual teams on tasks, projects or assignments. May train or mentor less experienced attorneys or paralegals on procedural, business or legal issues.

Typical Skills and Experiences:
Education: JD degree from an accredited law school. Maintains an active license in the state in which the position is located.
Certification / Designation: Currently licensed as an attorney in an appropriate U.S. jurisdiction.
Experience: Solid legal expertise. Typically has four or more years of relevant legal
Knowledge: Has a moderate amount of experience in an area of legal expertise. Knowledge of legal practices and procedures. Project management concepts and techniques.
Competencies: Established oral and written communication skills for interacting with mid level OCLO associates and business partners. Analytical ability to interpret statutes, regulations, insurance policies and other contracts. Has limited
decision-making ability. Ability to organize and coordinate projects and cases. Negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.
