Senior Staff Analyst - Legal Services


in New Orleans LA

Job Summary

We are looking for a knowledgeable and experienced analyst to join the Employment, Benefits and Labor section of Entergy’s Legal Services department. Entergy’s employee benefit plans and programs include both final average pay and cash balance defined benefit pension plans, defined contribution (401(K)) plans, non-qualified retirement plans and health and welfare plans. The analyst will support and assist the attorneys in the benefits practice group, consult frequently with outside counsel, and collaborate with employees in HR and other Entergy departments involved in activities related to Entergy’s employee benefit plans.

Job Duties / Responsibilities

  • Draft and/or review benefit plan documents and amendments
  • Review Summary Plan Descriptions, Summaries of Material Modifications and various benefit communications
  • Provide legal support for resolution of compliance issues, annual reporting process and participant disclosures
  • Provide advice and assistance with participant claims and appeals and benefit plan corrections
  • Assist with voluntary compliance program filings and other regulatory filings with the IRS and DOL
  • Assist with the IRS for tax determination letters and tax exempt status letters for employee benefit plans and trusts
  • Advise and assist with administrative services agreements and other vendor contracts   
  • Participate in benefit plan design projects
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory changes and analyze the implications for Entergy’s benefit plans
  • Maintain project log and review with attorneys to ensure projects are on track and deadlines are met
  • Assist with managing the flow of work to and from outside counsel
  • Review benefits provisions of collective bargaining agreements and determine plan amendments required to implement changes
  • Provide legal support for implementation of benefit plan design and administrative changes
  • Assist with employee benefit plan aspects of mergers and acquisitions, corporate reorganizations and other transaction, including determining requirements for plan amendments, regulatory filings, etc. as a result of corporate transactions
  • Assist with internal and external audits of benefit plans and processes

Job Qualifications and Experience

Minimum Education Required

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in researching complex topics and drafting and reviewing technical documents; law degree not required but a plus

Minimum Experience Required

  • At least 10 years of experience in pension, savings and other employee benefit plan administration or consulting, including individually designed single employer plans and large employer plans

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Extensive knowledge of ERISA and Internal Revenue Code requirements for benefit plans
  • Knowledge of COBRA, HIPAA, USERRA, and Affordable Care Act requirements
  • Familiarity with compliance and regulatory issues governing the operation and administration of qualified and non-qualified retirement plans and health and welfare plans
  • Strong organization and analytical skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize workload
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information
  • Ability to work as part of a team

License or Certifications Preferred

  • American Society of Pension Professionals & Actuaries (ASPPA) designation
  • Certified Employee Benefit Specialist (CEBS) designation
