Means & Associates, a division of Moran Knobel, Inc. has a great opportunity for a Retirement Plan Administrator for DC and Tribal Plans in the San Diego office. The successful candidate will have experience with ASC Pension Administration and/or Datair software. You will be working with Managers, team members, clients, and outside vendors. The candidate must be highly motivated, detail and service-oriented, and possess excellent communication and strong technical skills.

This is not a remote position; working in the San Diego office is required at this time.


  • Assist with new client Takeover / Implementation functions: review documents and data received, vendors’ plan setup forms, document restatements, uploading historical data/vesting to ASC.
  • Assist with Asset Conversions: vendor phone calls, setup vendor forms, Blackout notice, review and verify conversion reports.
  • Assist Senior Consultants with Defined Contribution Plan administration; which may include Tribal ERISA and non-ERISA plans, large plans, multiple employer plans, and plans with controlled group compliance needs.
  • Handle a small caseload of full DC Administration, including Tribal (ERISA and non-ERISA) plans.
  • Provide essential compliance testing for stand-alone DC plans.
  • Identify non-compliance and fiduciary responsibility issues; experience with IRS and DOL correction programs a plus.
  • Analyze deposit timing to identify potential late deferral or loan payment deposits.
  • Understand and review pension trust accounting reports for accuracy.
  • Prepare client reports and confirm accuracy of data.
  • Communicate issues and make recommendations for resolution to the firm’s Director of Compliance.
  • Prepare for and support DOL, IRS and Accountant Audits, as needed.
  • Available to work extended hours during peak work periods.


  • Understand and able to analyze provisions in plan documents to ensure operational compliance with IRS and DOL regulations; determine eligibility, plan entry dates, plan compensation, contribution formula and allocation, vesting, and distributable events, including the form and timing of distributions.
  • Sound knowledge of compliance requirements regarding employer contribution calculations, deduction limits, contribution deposit deadlines, top-heavy determination, coverage testing, controlled groups and annual additions limitations.
  • Knowledge of all aspects of distributions including minimum distributions, hardship withdrawals, QDROs, and loans.
  • Understanding of IRS filing requirements and deadlines for qualified plans including various required participant disclosure notice deadlines.

Education / Skills:

  • Experience in ASC is a large plus for the San Diego office. Datair helpful. FIS (Relius) Document System is a plus. Experience with PensionPro workflow software a plus.
  • An ASPPA designation (CPC, QPA, QKA) and/or NIPA APA credential needed; ERPA helpful
  • Three to five years’ experience in a pension administration TPA firm required.
  • Assisting with large plans’ Administration helpful. DB / DC Combo and Cash Balance Plan experience a plus.
  • Ability to effectively communicate, both in writing and orally in a professional manner.
  • A desire to take ownership of the position while working as a Team player in a doer/checker (peer review) environment. Concern for quality and standards.
  • Ability to work under pressure of deadlines and demanding clients while maintaining a positive and professional attitude.
  • Work with minimal supervision
  • Good organizational and time management skills.
  • Analytical and critical-thinking skills.
