Regional Wholesaler - Retirement Plans


in Daly City CA

This position will cover:

Territory goes north to include Santa Rosa, south to Santa Maria (Just north of Santa Barbara, all of San Francisco, and San Jose.  Does not cover the East Bay,with the exception of Fremont. 

JOB SUMMARY: The purpose of this position is to sell Nationwide retirement plan investment products through financial intermediaries to retirement plan sponsors. Financial intermediaries include Investment Advisor Representative (IAR) representing Registered Investment Advisors (RIA) and Registered Representatives representing Broker Dealers.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: Reports to Sales Manager; no direct reports


  • Identify, meet and communicate with Investment Professionals (IPs) to promote Nationwide products and services. Assist IP in identifying and marketing to prospects. Consult and educate Investment Professionals on all aspects of Retirement Plans business. Encourage repeat business with IPs and obtain referrals to other IPs. Coordinate with Nationwide's team of specialists regarding cross-selling opportunities, referrals and joint meetings.
  • Coordinate with home office staff and third party administrators in the preparation of proposals, presentations, and closing paperwork as needed. Assist IPs at meetings with prospective customers including fact finding and presentations.
  • Assist in asset retention and servicing on a case-by-case basis, including field visits with IPs and customers and coordination with home office.
  • Attend, participate in, and promote Nationwide at industry-wide conferences and broker / dealer conferences. Coordinate and conduct city-wide group meetings within region.
  • Attend and participate in Nationwide’s national and divisional meetings. Serve on special field committees as assigned by home office. Provide input as requested regarding products, services, competitors, industry trends, etc.
  • Prepare activity, expense and other reporting on a timely basis. Participate in national and divisional conference calls. Provide special reports and feedback as requested.
  • Stay current with industry trends, products, services, competitors. Maintain required on-going license and designation education, FINRA requirements, home office policies, practices, courses. Reviews, advises and participates actively in issues concerning new financial and administrative system development to facilitate development and dissemination of accurate financial data within NFS.
  • Manage territory to minimize conflict with other distributions systems.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Education:  Undergraduate studies in Business, Finance, Communications, Liberal Arts preferred

License / Certification / Designation: FINRA Series 6 or 7, Series 63, Series 65, State Life / Annuity Insurance Agent licenses required. CLU, ChFC, FLMI, CFP, ASPPA designations preferred. Associates must obtain the required Federal and/or state licenses/registrations within the time period designated by the business unit. Additional licenses/registrations may be required when new products and services are implemented. If an associate fails or is unable to obtain required licenses/registrations within the time period designated by the business unit, the associate will be ineligible to continue in the position.

Experience:  Minimum of five years of experience in 401(k)/retirement plan business with advisor-driven market preferred, and/or direct 401(k) sales experience. Investment Professional, internal or external wholesaler, field servicing, or other relationship management role in the financial services industry. Retirement plan industry experience is preferred.

Knowledge:  College-level mathematics, finance, statistics, economics, economics and investment management theories / practices.

Skills / Competencies: Very strong interpersonal and written skills to effectively communicate directly with company officers, top brokers, home office and outside business partners. Excellent group presentation skills for audiences of company owners, officers, principals, executive boards, and financial intermediaries up to 200 people. Ability to effective teach state continuing education courses to industry professionals. Basic Microsoft office usage skills including MS Word, MS Powerpoint, MS Excel, Lotus Notes, Seibel CRM. Excellent time management and organizational skills required to manage statewide sales activities and multiple sales/distribution relationships (independent administrators and financial intermediaries).

Overtime Eligibility:  Not Eligible (Exempt).

Working Conditions: Travel 3 - 4 days/week, including routinely 1 - 2 nights/week.
