Stoel Rives LLP seeks a Retirement Plan Manager who will have firm-wide responsibilities and provide 1) daily management of the various retirement benefits and related retirement plans sponsored by Stoel Rives, 2) leadership of the in-house Retirement Department staff, operations and recordkeeping, 3) administrative support of the firm’s Retirement Committee, which has fiduciary responsibility for administering the Stoel Rives retirement plans, and 4) customer-friendly and prompt solutions to participant needs. Stoel Rives currently sponsors two separate ERISA-qualified retirement plans (“Plans”): a multi-featured defined contribution plan (which also includes a profit sharing plan with added 401(k) and self-directed account features), and a separate cash balance plan. The defined contribution plan provides a unique career opportunity because the large majority of its assets are invested in a professionally managed, globally diversified pooled investment fund that includes private fund (debt and equity) investments and direct real estate assets, in addition to mutual funds. All recordkeeping, accounting and financial reporting are handled in-house with the Retirement Plan Manager participating in, and overseeing, all functions. This position is located in our Portland, Oregon office.

This position requires a person who can both (1) manage the Plans in accordance with ERISA and other legal requirements, plan documents, and firm policies; and (2) work under pressure to serve the needs of the Plans’ participants (over 1,300 current and former employees), Retirement Committee members, in-house legal counsel and outside service providers to the Plans, staff of the Retirement Department, and firm administration. The position reports to the firm’s HR Director and to the Retirement Committee Chair.


  • Technical knowledge and experience in the area of ERISA-qualified retirement plan management and administration. A college degree is strongly preferred but not required.
  • Dependability and ability to master all aspects of retirement plan administration.
  • Familiarity with the retirement plan investment industry, and with basic investment strategies and policies, asset classes and allocation approaches, investment performance measurement, and ERISA plan distribution rules.
  • Reliability and effective planning, organizational and follow through skills.
  • Initiative and ability to seek information from several sources to understand problems, trends or opportunities related to the Plans, and synthesize and present potential suggestions and solutions to respond to those problems, trends and opportunities.
  • Proven skills in handling multiple priorities, meeting deadlines, and functioning in a professional and courteous manner under the pressure of changing priorities and time-sensitive deadlines.
  • Strong technology skills, with proficiency in various word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation programs in a Windows-based environment.  Experience with retirement plan administration and recordkeeping software programs, including Relius.
  • Ability to manage projects and lead a team who works at a fast pace with detailed information to produce consistently accurate and timely results.
  • Ability to professionally manage with grace dynamic relationships with the Plans’ participants, Committee members, in house legal counsel, Department staff, and outside service providers.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with a client service focus.
  • Extremely strong attention to detail in both written and financial work product.
