Position Purpose

The Retirement Benefits Consultant is a key member of the North America (NA) HR Solutions team. Reporting to the NA Retirement Senior Consultant, this individual is highly versed in retirement programs and will leverage best practice and knowledge of the retirement benefits industry, legal requirements to make recommendations on the strategy, and design and delivery of retirement benefit programs. This will include research, analysis and ongoing oversight of required governance and compliance of the retirement programs offered ensuring Cargill is providing effective and competitive benefit solutions for active and retired employees. Responsibilities of this position include consulting with leadership, business partners and functions to determine the path forward, including project planning and partnering with the delivery team on execution. Key activities include, but are not limited to, development of retirement benefit program recommendations with financial and competitive analysis, implementation of the approved retirement program benefit strategies, policies, programs, vendor management and providing guidance on the processes.

Principal Accountabilities

30% - Consultation on Retirement Benefit Programs and Policies

  • Drawing upon retirement benefit knowledge and an understanding of the business environment and requirements while under limited supervision:
    • Consults with key stakeholders
    • Analyzes and provides recommendations on future adoption of programs
    • Provides guidance to HR Business Partners regarding the compliant delivery of benefits
    • Guides, reviews and drives benefit projects 

25% - Benefit Research, Analysis and provide support tools 

  • Draw upon knowledge of benefit principles, theories and concepts for the review of benchmarking, research, and analysis related to:
    • Cost modeling, business impact, market comparisons and emerging trends
    • Preparing complex information for use by manager for overall reporting
    • Preparing complex reports for use with HR Managers and finance

25% - Compliance and Governance

  • Guides, reviews and performs the design and execution of the benefits framework
    • Under limited supervision, consults HR and business in benefits policies and programs, and champions governance process for approvals
    • Ensures the consistent application of benefits administration in compliance with all regulatory requirements for a complex geography and/or client group
    • Works with legal as appropriate
    • Helps to ensure measurement for compliance is in place with other measurements

15% - Business Relationship and Vendor Management 

  • Provide consultation to HR and business managers regarding benefits issues and activities
    • Provide direction on communications regarding strategies, policies, programs and processes
    • Provide support in the design / delivery of training and education
    • Monitor vendor’s operational performance and implementation of programs

5% - Other Duties, as assigned


  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 5+ years’ experience with Defined Contribution and Defined Benefit Retirement Plans
  • Strong and proven analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Ability to analyze and interpret data to communicate effectively and make recommendations to improve strategies / methods
  • Proven success in developing and delivering innovation and customer oriented solutions
  • Demonstrated ability to seek out strategic alliances and successfully collaborate with others both inside and outside the organization
  • Ability to effectively communicate across multiple levels of the organization, including presenting to key stakeholders and employee groups
  • Knowledge of the retirement benefits industry and market trends
  • Must be resourceful and able to work under minimal supervision
  • Strong oral and written communications skills
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency in MS Excel and PowerPoint
  • Proven ability to be a team player


  • Previous experience with an outsource benefits administration environment
  • Experience working with non-qualified and ESOP retirement benefit plans
