RFP Writer

Job Summary (Primary purpose of this Role):

The Request for Proposal (RFP) Writer is responsible for producing responses to RFPs that will drive business growth and retain existing business. The successful RFP writer will partner closely with representatives from sales, business development, relationship management, and subject matter experts to produce informed, detailed and persuasive proposals.

A successful candidate will play a key role in prospect growth and client retention, partnering with key stakeholders firm-wide to ensure appropriate competitive positioning in proposals and client materials. The RFP writer will effectively manage proposals from inception to completion, adhering to all internal and external deadlines. The candidate will also manage various projects seeking to enhance materials, refine processes, and provide proactive team support. The RFP writer should continuously strive to increase their knowledge of our products and the industry in order to best produce meaningful responses. The RFP writer will also maintain assigned libraries of content within our content management system to further streamline the production of RFPs and increase accuracy of our responses. Additionally, the RFP writer will strive to build relationships with business partners across the firm, and seeking opportunities to add value to existing processes.

Key Accountabilities (Allocate the percent of total working time spending on each accountability, which should add up to 100%)

Individual Accountabilities:

  • Own the proposal process, including strategy sessions, content development, project management, internal research, technical accuracy, brand adherence, compliance reviews, and quality control
  • Respond to a variety of RFPs, RFIs, databases, and industry surveys with tailored responses that focus on the benefits of John Hancock’s retirement plan products
  • Support the development and maintenance of our proposal database
  • Build and maintain relationships across the company to ensure that proposal-related needs are met
  • Attend ongoing training sessions on industry trends and our own products and services
  • Occasionally create and support additional communications efforts for our retirement plan products (as needed)
  • Record all work efforts in accordance with team procedures

Key Shared Accountabilities:

  • Collaborate with peers to ensure all work is completed on time and with the most updated content
  • Work with SMEs and other representatives from other business areas to improve the quality of the RFP library

Job Requirements:

  • 3-5 years of experience
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Bachelor’s degree in advertising, communications, marketing, English, journalism or equivalent
  • Experience with proposal software (PMAPS/Qvidian) is a plus
  • Working knowledge of retirement plans (defined contribution, defined benefit, executive benefit, etc.)


  • Excellent writing ability and ability to create compelling communications that conform to the JH writing style guide
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple deadlines simultaneously
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and keen attention to detail
  • Curiosity and eagerness to investigate, learn, collaborate, and innovate, while bringing a positive, flexible attitude
  • Ability to work well across departments/levels — including sales teams — and to apply influence and negotiation skills
