Pension Claims Examiner

High school diploma (Associate’s degree preferred). 3+ years’ experience in a TPA or a Taft-Hartley multi-employer plan environment. Proficiency with Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, and Outlook. Strong work ethic and team player who will take initiative. Highly developed sense of integrity and commitment to customer service. Excellent organizational skills with ability to work calmly while handling multiple priorities. Ability to read and analyze general business materials, technical procedures, benefit plans and regulations. Strong research and analytical abilities. Ability to communicate clearly and professionally, both verbally and in writing. Strong mathematical skills. Bilingual English/Spanish preferred but not required.


The most significant responsibilities of this job classification are to:

  1. Process retirement benefit applications (early, normal and disability) and Qualified Domestic Relations Orders (QDROs).
  2. Respond to inquiries from participants, beneficiaries, union representatives and trustees regarding pension benefits, both in written form and verbally.
  3. Determine benefit eligibility and request necessary documentation from unions, employers and other trust funds.
  4. Initiate and prepare correspondence to participants, beneficiaries and claimants regarding general account information, pension history, monthly retirement benefits, etc.
  5. Maintain required files and documentation.
  6. Prepare, balance and run checks; review and resolve outstanding checks and recover overpayments.
  7. Review reports for suspensions of benefits and recalculations.
  8. Enter data to update and correct member information in database.

Other responsibilities will be assigned by Management based on the individual’s abilities.


Background screening and educational verification will be conducted on individuals offered employment.
