What You’ll Do

As a part of the Legal and Regulatory Services team, you’ll play a key role in the continued success of our Retirement Plans Business Unit.  You’ll utilize your strong collaboration skills and industry expertise to offer advice and counsel to key stakeholders, provide legally compliant products for our clients, and help achieve The Standard’s business goals. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide advice and counsel to a wide variety of Business stakeholders, including Management, Sales, Operations, and Client Service to ensure compliant plan designs and strategies.  
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of potential legislation and regulatory developments and communicate updates to stakeholders.  
  • Gather diverse sets of requirements from various stakeholders to synthesize and communicate information that supports informed decision-making.
  • Produce quality, defensible contractual language that accurately reflects stakeholder’s intent.
  • Effectively communicate potential risks and outcomes, based on business goals. 
  • Efficiently formulate accurate, comprehensive advice easily understandable by lay people. 
  • Demonstrate a consistent understanding of, and motivation to, achieve business goals in a legally defensible manner. 

The Skills and Background You’ll Need

  • Education: Doctor of Jurisprudence and admitted to practice in state bar of residence or other relevant jurisdiction.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in relevant areas of the law, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Substantive understanding of the retirement plan industry and regulatory structure (including ERISA, Internal Revenue Code, securities and state insurance law).
  • Strong communications skills, including ability to produce clear, concise, and persuasive work product, while also being an active listener. 
  • Ability to work with internal business partners to identify and prioritize business needs and then assess and communicate potential risks and opportunities.
  • Develop and deliver successful presentations to internal audiences.
  • Ability to work well with team members in a highly supportive and collaborative environment
