The International Union, UAW is seeking an Actuary for a direct-hire, onsite position in Detroit, MI. This pivotal role involves costing and evaluating collectively bargained retirement benefits, evaluating actuarial assumptions, developing and reviewing retiree healthcare premium calculations, and defined contribution and pension costing. The ideal candidate will have the ability to compile and evaluate statistical data, demonstrate an advanced understanding of actuarial concepts and knowledge related to pensions and retiree healthcare, and exhibit strong proficiency in Excel for complex mathematical modeling. The candidate will also possess excellent communication skills for conveying complex data clearly and concisely and the ability to manage multiple projects.

Job Requirements:

  • Provide onsite support in collective bargaining on retirement security benefits when needed
  • Provide reasonable cost estimates for company or union proposals dealing with changes in healthcare, defined contribution and defined benefit plans.
  • Review of actuarial reports regarding methodology and reasonableness of self-funded premium calculations
  • Review and evaluation of retiree health premium calculations, including analyzing credibility issues and claims year weighting
  • Provide mathematical assistance in reviewing grievance settlements having to do with retroactive adjustments in wages and overtime, 401K adjustments, pension accrual credits, etc.
  • Provide actuarial support on pension de-risking and plan terminations
  • Analyze Qualified Domestic Relation Orders for compliance with collective bargaining agreements.
  • Analyze and advise on non-discrimination testing for both DC and DB plans.
  • Evaluation and assistance in implementing multi-employer pension and healthcare plans
  • Assist in arbitration preparations
  • Provide support evaluating legislative changes and resulting requirements and plan updates
  • Review and advise of IRS, Department of Labor, and other compliance filings.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in actuarial science or a related discipline.
  • Completion of ASA is required.
  • Expert-level proficiency in Excel for mathematical modeling and statistical analysis.
  • Ability to perform several projects while maintaining strict deadlines.
  • Medicare Supplement pricing experience.
  • Experience with running SQL queries.
  • Insurance industry experience.
