From 401(k) plan design and administration, compliance and actuarial consulting, to pension outsourcing and recordkeeping, Definiti helps organizations deliver smart retirement solutions to their employees. 

The purpose of the Consulting Actuary will be responsible for the management of IRS qualified Defined Benefit (Cash Balance) plans in our small plan market. Most of these clients sponsor DB/DC combo plans. This includes consulting on the actuarial valuation, special plan design, proposal requests and IRS/DOL/PBGC regulatory compliance. Direct client relationship building for some clients is expected.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Manage recurring actuarial projects with Actuarial staff
  • Represent the company on client calls and in client meetings as needed
  • Ability to accurately interpret and apply plan documents provisions
  • Ensure compliance with DOL, IRS and PBGC requirements
  • Review of Annual compliance testing for assigned clients (401(a)(4), 40q(a)(26), Plan Limits, Top Heavy, for both solo and combo Plans
  • Review/Preparation of Form 5500, Schedule SB and related schedules, Form 8955-SSA and PBGC filings
  • Certify Actuarial valuations for traditional defined benefits plans and cash balance plans.
  • Review Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) determination
  • Benefit calculations including optional forms of payment
  • Ensure proper coordination and delivery of annual required notices
  • Review and Approval Retirement Plan Consultant work within team environment
  • Prepare Proposals for potential Cash Balance & Defined Benefit Plan clients
  • Support the retirement plan implementation, conversion, de-conversion, and termination processes
  • Oversee plan assignments with an average case load of 150-185 clients
  • Assist with conversion of Actuarial Valuations within Valuation software (ASC)


  • College Degree required or 5 years’ experience in lieu of education
  • 5+ years of prior actuarial work experience 
  • Broad knowledge of the retirement plan industry
  • EA designation required
  • Experience with ASC software preferred
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications
  • Demonstrated excellence in written and verbal communication
  • Must be detailed and possess strong organizational skills
  • Time management focused adhering to deadlines and timelines
  • Proficient with Small Plan Actuarial calculations & combined Nondiscrimination Testing
  • Understand the annual lifecycle of a plan (data collection, eligibility, compliance testing, trust accounting and Form 5500 preparation and filing
