Legal Specialist - Employment & ERISA


in Springfield MA

The Opportunity

The legal specialist will be an integral part of MassMutual’s Corporate Law team, which is responsible for supporting the legal needs of MassMutual’s corporate units, including human resources, and its retirement, health and welfare and fringe benefit plans.  In this individual contributor role you will interact with sophisticated business partners and legal colleagues on a variety of employment, immigration, employee benefits and ERISA matters. 

The Impact

Under limited guidance of an attorney, provides support service to attorneys with responsibilities to generally include, among other things, conducting complex legal research and analysis and advising attorneys on results; drafting legal and business communications; preparing regulatory filings; drafting correspondence; reviewing and interpreting contracts; drafting contract terms; and assisting in the file preparation for legal action. Prepare and evaluate complex legal documentation to resolve problems and close matters. Identify legal issues that require attorney consideration and clearly identify and articulate such issues to attorneys. Evaluate and resolve complex matters. Monitor new legislative, regulatory and case law developments; assess potential implications for the business, summarize and make recommendations. May initiate and oversee implementation of changes in internal procedures. Interacts with all levels, including leaders in the organization.

Specific responsibilities and focus for this role will include, and are not limited to: 

Employment Law:

  • Be the first point of contact for business clients with regard to certain work visa / authorization matters, including developing standard processes, maintaining FAQ and background communications for human resources and managers, reviewing and updating templates, responding to USCIS inquiries and requests for verification, liaising with outside immigration counsel on U.S. visa and work authorization matters and on obtaining work visas for non-U.S. operations
  • Research and provide clear and precise summaries of issues associated with various matters under federal and state law employment laws and regulations, including identifying emerging issues and cases/matters, providing concise and actionable case summaries and providing analysis of new legislation and regulations and the impact to MassMutual operations
  • Prepare legal documents related to employment practices (supports non-litigation role)
  • Review and summarize candidate restrictive covenant agreements
  • Perform other duties as assigned

ERISA and Employee Benefits:

  • Provide support services to ERISA attorney responsible for Company-sponsored employee benefit plan
  • Drafting of employee benefit plan documents, including plan amendments, restatements, summary plan descriptions and participant communications;
  • Conducting reviews of benefit communications, forms and other documentation prepared by others for compliance with applicable law and plan terms;
  • Performing research and analysis of plan provisions and applicable laws, including ERISA, the Internal Revenue Code, COBRA and HIPAA;
  • Serving as an initial point of contact for the Human Resources Operations and Total Rewards teams with regard to routine administrative benefits matters;
  • Providing support to plan fiduciaries in carrying out their obligations, including analysis of benefit claims and related correspondence; and reviewing powers of attorney and other legal documents.

The Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Paralegal certificate or Juris Doctorate
  • A minimum of 2 years Westlaw and/or Lexis experience
  • A minimum of 3 years legal research experience
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite 
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills
  • Accountable, agile and resilient; able to multitask, embrace change and manage well under pressure
  • Intellectually curious; seeks to understand

The Ideal Qualifications

  • 5 years experience with ERISA and employee benefits law
