Defined Contribution Analyst

Job Responsibilities

The Defined Contribution Analyst is a role for an experienced benefits administrator. This is a career-track position, potentially leading to a Consultant role. The Defined Contribution Analyst supports senior staff in providing administration and consulting services for defined contribution retirement plans, such as 401(k), profit sharing, and employee stock ownership plans.

  • Perform non-routine tasks and solve problems of medium complexity under limited supervision
  • Inspect results and compare them with client and consultant expectations before turning in work for review
  • Partner with clients and team leaders / consultants to solve problems and improve processes
  • Evaluate and recommend solutions to team leaders / consultants
  • Communicate effectively with clients and partners to facilitate day-to-day operations
  • Understand clients’ needs, concerns, and ideas
  • Research and develop information to support consultants in resolving client issues and questions
  • Identify areas for client service improvement and support consultants to implement process changes
  • Evaluate client situations and involve team leaders / consultants as necessary
  • Perform work efficiently to attain individual billing and realization rate goals, which directly affect the profitability of the firm

Typical Tasks

  • Collect, scrub, analyze, manipulate, and process complex data using a variety of software
  • Perform a variety of allocations and calculations, including contributions, distributions and earnings
  • Prepare government filings such as Forms 1099-R, 5330, 5500, and 8955-SSA
  • Perform nondiscrimination testing
  • Reconcile all work products
  • Prepare client reports and participant statements

Core Competencies

  • Basic knowledge of the design, operation, and regulations governing defined contribution plans, including 401(k), ESOP, 403(b), and 457
  • Strong analytical and mathematical skills with an emphasis on problem solving
  • Intermediate Microsoft Office skills, particularly in Excel and/or Access
  • Ability to meet deadlines with the highest degree of accuracy
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills
  • Strong organizational and problem solving skills with the ability to track multiple tasks and issues, set goals, and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment


  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Business, Mathematics, Finance, or related;
  • 2+ years of employee benefit or defined contribution experience;
  • ASPPA or CEBS exams preferable; and
  • Demonstrated record of success in academics and/or on the job.
