About CIRS:

The Cultural Institutions Retirement System (“CIRS”) administers three multiemployer plans (i.e., defined benefit pension, 401(k) savings and group life insurance) for approximately 250 daycare centers and 50 cultural institutions (including the American Museum of Natural History and the Wildlife Conservation Society) in the New York City area.  Established in 1962, CIRS covers over 8,000 active employees and 12,000 retirees/deferred vested participants, working to ensure the financial future and wellbeing of its plan members.

The Role:

The Retirement Plan Field Associate (“Associate”) is responsible for addressing a myriad of daily activities pertaining to the organizations and their employees that participate in the CIRS Plans.The role is multi-faceted, anchored by an ultimate accountability for collaborating with other CIRS staff to maintain and grow CIRS’ relationships and servicing capability with participating institutions.

This includes but may not be limited to:

  • Conducting compliance audits, and formulating and implementing remedies as needed;
  • Addressing and enforcing compliance with regulations governing plan participation;
  • Checking the accuracy of participant data including analysis and reporting;
  • Educating and training participating institutions and their employees about CIRS, its benefit plans and enrollment/participation rules;
  • Responding to communications and inquiries from participating institutions, and generally building and maintaining effective rapport and relationships on behalf of CIRS;
  • Identifying trends in servicing activities and recommending solutions and actions to improve the quality of CIRS’ servicing relationship with participating institutions.
  • Managing vendors;
  • Updating administrative forms, documents and notices.
  • Development of electronic and written communication, literature and other material provided to CIRS participating employers and plan members including updates on the CIRS website.

The Representative reports to the Associate Director of CIRS.The position requires travel to participating institution offices located throughout the 5 boroughs of New York City.

The Requirements:

  • Undergraduate degree;
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in employee benefits administration involving both defined benefit and defined contribution plans to include strong familiarity with record-keeping practices and compliance and regulatory standards governing the administration of these plans.
  • Knowledge of multiemployer benefit plans and/or attainment of relevant industry designations (e.g., CEBS, Society of Actuary / ASPPA accreditation), a plus.
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft applications (i.e., Excel, PowerPoint, Word); experience updating/interfacing with company websites a plus.
  • Experience with managing and updating spreadsheets and aptitude with data analysis.
  • Demonstrated project management skills and ability to work both independently and in teams.
  • Effective communication (oral/written) and interpersonal / relationship building skills.
