Senior Annuity Placement Specialist


in NY

The purpose of this job is to provide a full range of FSG services to sophisticated clients who demand the design and implementation of non-standard and/or complex solutions. Will have specialist knowledge of the annuity buyout process and one or more area of analysis relating to risk management / risk reduction for pension schemes. Uses wide breadth and depth of knowledge and experience to reach sound judgments, add value and develop client-focused solutions. Develops business opportunities with new and existing clients and participates in external marketing initiatives (e.g. industry forums and conferences) and develops/ contributes to intellectual capital development, etc. Other areas of responsibility/interest may include leading specialist research teams/projects.


Leads clients and delivers analysis on annuity placement strategy and execution in relation to pension schemes for both trustee and corporate clients. In particular, this may include:

  • Leading annuity placement transactions; be the primary contact for Mercer’s clients and the annuity providers to ensure a successful annuity liability transition
  • Delivering Mercer’s consulting services for Defined Benefit pension clients looking to purchase group annuity contracts for pension plan participants
  • Working and negotiating with insurers from the initial bidding and price discovery process through execution and post deal transition of pension liabilities 
  • Liaising with Mercer’s internal teams to gather and review plan details and participant data 
  • Monitoring the insurance market place of providers offering group annuity products 
  • Presenting and facilitating the preparation of insurance market due diligence material to support our consulting process around the Department of Labor guidelines for annuity buyout transactions in compliance with interpretive bulletin 95-1 
  • Providing project management support for larger buyout transactions and coordinating across multiple teams, internal and external parties
  • Creating and evaluating marketing material and business development efforts for Mercer’s annuity placement services 
  • Sharing the group’s expertise in this area across Mercer’s Lines of Business, in particular with Mercer’s Retirement and Investment colleagues 
  • Coordinating strategy and execution services with those in other geographies
  • Determines clients’ requirements and briefs team as appropriate, providing the direction and guidance required to ensure deadlines and service standards are met. Acts as a peer reviewer, mentor and role model for colleagues, motivating staff to deliver a high standard of work within given timeframes and budgets, thereby creating an environment that encourages both individual and team accomplishments 
  • Identifies new prospects and leads sales meetings to generate revenue for Mercer 
  • Meets business targets and billing deadlines. Contributes to new business proposals and/or seeks to extend the range of services provided to clients within own and other business lines as appropriate. 
  • Actively contributes to FSG specialist research process, FSG tools development and FSG intellectual capital, as appropriate. Ensures clients receive high quality information incorporating intellectual capital generated within the FSG and Mercer.
  • Sponsoring and managing change within a complex organization working with multiple stakeholders within Mercer’s Wealth business.
  • Promotes the "One Mercer" concept to others
  • Ensures all professionalism/compliance processes are understood and followed


  • Bachelor degree/Masters degree (preferred), Mathematics, Statistics, and or equivalent business degree.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience within an Insurance, Financial Strategy and/or Investment or Retirement, Risk and Finance Consulting environment
  • Specialized knowledge of financial strategy, group annuities or other insurance company investment products and services. Ability to consultant on all products within the investment market and advise clients of appropriate choices for their situation
  • Strong project and time management skills
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail
  • Good technical skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Self-motivation and an ability to work well in a highly collaborative team environment
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • CFA or Actuarial Certifications preferred but not required. Life, Accident & Health Insurance Agent License required (or quickly obtained upon hire)
