Sales Manager (Associate Director of Client Relations)

Penn State Extension is seeking a high performing individual interested in serving as the ambassador and face of the organization at the state level.  They will be responsible for developing long-lasting relationships with customers and key stakeholders to match priority issues and needs of the customer with organizational products/services.  

The Client Relationship Leader must stay current on all Extension products, expertise, and services and effectively communicate the value and impact of the organization to customers/stakeholders, maximize organizational relevance and revenue, grow the customer base, and work with key stakeholders to advocate for and secure funding.  

The individual who serves in this position is a member of the senior management team of Penn State Extension and is responsible for proving management strategy to build, grow, and maintain long-lasting organizational relationships with key customers and stakeholders.  They provide leadership, strategy, goals, and training for the Extension Client Relations Managers across the state who work within defined territories to build organizational and brand awareness, support and expand existing and new client relationships, serve as organizational liaisons, and ensure excellent customer service and satisfaction.  

This position will grow sales and engage stakeholders in advocacy for funding support.  They will develop effective practices, processes, procedures and policies for the organization. This individual will work with the Associate Director of Programs to ensure product development mix and alignment with customer needs and delivery at the local level to ensure revenue goals are met.

Specific responsibilities include:  

  • Leadership and Supervision:  Provide strategy, leadership, supervision, processes, training and support for 10 Client Relations Managers across the state and two urban center directors.  
  • Define territories and set annual goals and metrics for success including defining target audiences, contact expectations and frequency, product sales/distribution and reporting requirements.
  • Complete annual performance reviews.  
  • Product Supply and Demand:  Work with associate director of programs and assistant directors of programs to ensure the organization's product mix and price aligns with organizational core competencies, goals, and priorities as well as customer demands, changing trends, and competition.  
  • Brand Ambassador and Liaison:  Serve as a brand ambassador and monitor and ensure development of relationships with key stakeholders, county commissioners and the county commissioners association of Pennsylvania to expand county support and funding as well as with state legislators and appropriations.  
  • Support Strategic Units in Implementing Strategies: Work with AG Communications and Marketing on e-commerce, communication and marketing strategies around products, services, and impacts.
  • Work with College Relations on external relations, extension board management, and legislative advocacy efforts.  
  • Conflict Resolution and Risk Management:  Support and assist client relations managers with issues and conflict resolution, risk management strategies, and other complex challenges as appropriate.
  • Budgets and Practices:  Develop, implement and manage budgets, best practices, processes, procedures and policies.  
  • Organizational Leadership:  Serve on Penn State Extension senior leadership team and provide leadership and input into mission, strategic vision, strategies, goals and priorities and ensure the Client Relationship Managers understand and properly represent these attributes in their responsibilities as brand ambassadors.

This job will be filled as a level 4, or level 5, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience.  

Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus six years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 4.  Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. Candidates must demonstrate effective human relations skills, a commitment to diversity, and outstanding communication and marketing skills.  Candidates must also demonstrate experience in developing and maintaining customer relationships and possess strong analytical, strategic planning and implementation skills.  A thorough understanding and demonstration of knowledge of sales strategies and target audiences is required as well as excellent conflict resolution and problem solving abilities.
